Book of Daniel
Endurance for the Future
COURSE DESCRIPTION The book of Daniel is a narrative history and prophetic oracle of God's protection, provision, and redemption of his people. It is the only book in the Bible to have two distinct genres in its two halves. The first half includes familiar stories with striking images (three young Jewish boys in the fiery furnace, a hand that suddenly writes on a wall, Daniel in the lions’ den, and a gigantic statue of a man composed of different materials). The second half includes visions that are filled with highly symbolic images, rather than literal characters and places. The sovereignty of God is a unifying element in the plot and theme. The course will explore Daniel through the historical-cultural context of the roots of biblical apocalyptic thought, the literary forms associated with apocalyptic writing and symbolic visions, the various interpretations of these writings, and how Daniel connects with the New Testament. Prepare to be challenged and encouraged as we begin to unlock the scriptural treasures embedded in this fascinating book.
